🇲🇾 Our Roots: A History of Malaysian Hostelling
Hostelling International Malaysia (HI-Malaysia) boasts a long and proud history dedicated to youth travel and cultural exchange within the country. Our organization was founded in 1955 and was officially registered on March 15, 1957, under the Societies Act. We were formerly known as the Malaysian Youth Hostels Association (MYHA), or Persatuan Asrama Belia Malaysia. This rich heritage is the foundation of our current operations, supporting travellers for nearly seven decades.

Evolution and Global Affiliation
As a voluntary, non-profit organization, HI-Malaysia is fully dedicated to our mission, and we are proud to be a full member of Hostelling International (HI), the global federation. To align our identity with this international family, the organization’s name change to Hostelling International Malaysia (HI-Malaysia) was officially approved by the Registrar of Societies on July 1, 2009. This rebranding cemented our place within the world’s largest youth hostelling network, ensuring consistent global standards for all our members and guests.
Leadership and Commitment
HI-Malaysia continues to be driven by committed leadership and a strong voluntary spirit. Our organization is currently led by our esteemed President, Lt Col (B) Hamirudin Hashim, who has been guiding the association since 2010. Under his direction, we continue to uphold the principles of providing affordable, welcoming, and high-quality accommodation to promote educational and cultural travel across Malaysia.
